Finding team building exercises isn’t difficult, but matching the culture of a company with exercises that appeal to their employees can be more challenging. Recently YES worked with a client to build a customized team activity around support for Chad’s Bracket, a remarkable non-profit organization that provided meaning for the group which was composed of 250 medical sales personnel. Together we created an impactful team building event – while giving back to children in need.
The Story of Chad’s Bracket is Powerful
For Chad’s Bracket it all started with a week of vomiting and crippling headaches for 4-year-old Felicity Withrow – leading up to a diagnosis that made her parents’ hearts sink. Doctors found a brain tumor and during surgery the surgeons discovered that they had to leave the small portion of the tumor that was on her tiny brain stem. What followed was a roller coaster of chemo, medications, and a second surgery when the tumor came back.
During one of many visits to see Felicity in the hospital, Roger Leggett (Felicity’s grandfather) and Chad Leggett (Felicity’s uncle) encountered a mom using a red wagon to transport her child through the hallways, while struggling to move an IV pole along beside the wagon. Roger and Chad knew immediately that there was a need for a way to safely attach an IV pole to those wagons so that parents would be able to transport their kids safely and easily.
Tragically, a few weeks later Chad passed away from heat stroke. Heartache flooded the family. But through it all, one thought remained in Roger’s mind: Chad’s legacy. Chad had wanted to create an IV pole attachment for those red wagons. That vision sustained Roger while he set out on a mission to develop Chad’s Bracket.
Working with engineers at the Children’s Hospital of Atlanta, Roger evaluated every safety concern. Not only was the bracket designed to safely attach wagons to a pump and IV bags, the wagons got seat belts, new safer wheels, and a low center of gravity. Happily, in 2014 young Felicity’s cancer went into remission, and the mission for Chad’s Bracket took off.
Involve Your Teams in Supporting Chad’s Bracket
For our client’s event, we incorporated Chad’s Bracket by having each team be responsible for working together to solve clues for points. For every activity, participants were required to challenge their skills as well as follow instructions while assembling wagons with the special hardware. As the event came to an end, Roger Leggett shared the story behind Chad’s Bracket – with tearful eyes in the room, everyone raised to their feet to give him a standing ovation!
